Federal Blvd. Task Force News

We're in the middle of a city council election in northwest Denver and the Partnership is sponsoring a candidate forum Tuesday, April 20th, 7:00 PM at Invesco Field at Mile High. This might be your last chance to interact and listen to the ten candidates react to issues of importance both to Federal but the council district and city as well. The upcoming election is entirely by mail ballot. Mail ballots will be hitting mailboxes in the few days before the forum so take advantage of this opportunity. For full details of the forum's format go the Partnership's Web site at www.federalboulevard.com. Spread the word!

The Partnership's Spring Social is today! at Ernie's Restaurant, W. 44th and Eliot (one block east of Federal), April 8th, 5:30 to 7:30 PM. The event is open to all and an excellent opportunity to mingle and socialize with like-minded folks and since it's election season, undoubtedly a few candidates!

Yesterday the Partnership received official notice from Denver Parks and Recreation that the setback requirement for Federal has been changed south of W. 20th Avenue. There is more work ahead, however. For details go to www.federalboulevard.com.

If you're a Facebook participant, log into your Facebook account and go to the Partnership Facebook site at: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Denver-CO/Federal-Boulevard-Partnership/61792795451. Please become a Fan by selecting the Become a Fan button. By becoming a Fan, you can keep up-to-date with ongoing activities and announcements. Feel free to share the Partnership site with your local Northwest Denver Facebook friends as well!

The Partnership is sponsoring an online survey gauging interest for specific improvements to Federal. Go the Partnership's Web site at http://www.federalboulevard.com/2010/03/what-is-your-preferred-future-boulevard-improvement/, for an article exploring the improvements but also feel free to follow the following link to take the survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/5WKGRBW. It will only take two minutes and you'll have an opportunity to populate your own suggested improvement. Results of the survey will be presented at the Partnership's candidate forum April 20th.

Denver's Planning Board is sponsoring a public hearing April 21 on adoption of the latest zoning code and map draft dated March 31, 2010. After the hearing, the Planning Board will deliberate on the draft and make a final recommendation for adoption to Denver City Council. The hearing will be held at 1:00 PM in Room 4F6/4G2 of the Wellington Web Building at 201 W. Colfax Avenue. The Partnership facilitated a public process last summer to develop recommendations on land use along Federal, which was submitted to City Council and Zoning officials last fall. The Partnership also attended the Planning Board's previous public hearing in October speaking in favor of new zone code adoption as well as speaking to recommendations previously provided to City Council. It is expected City Council will receive the Planning Board's recommendations in May and will be under Council review, discussion and adoption consideration through June.

Eco-Cycle Events/Accepting More Items

Our "neighbors" to the north in Boulder are now accepting new items.

Dear Eco-Cyclers,
It's Earth Month, and for us that usually means two things: an event we'd love to have you attend and a new material accepted at the CHaRM. Being true to tradition, this year we again have both:

Earth Day: Rocky Mountain PBS, CU
 and Eco-Cycle
 Special Screening: Earth Days
Thursday, April 15, 7 p.m.
Visual Arts Complex, 1085 18th Street, CU-Boulder
Join Eco-Cycle in celebrating the 40th Annual Earth Day this year! Rocky Mountain PBS, the University of Colorado Environmental Center and Eco-Cycle will present a free screening and panel discussion of Earth Days: American Experience. Our guest panel will address the environmental movement today, what's happening locally, key challenges and themes, how far we've come and what work is still left to be done. View the trailer of Earth Days: American Experience and RSVP to reserve your seat today!

Join us on April 15th for a special screening of Earth Days: American Experience.

CHaRM Now Recycles Yoga Mats

We’re accepting a new material at the CHaRM, and this one comes not a moment too soon for maintaining the eco-karma of thousands of area yogis and yoginis: Beginning Earth Day, April 22, 2010, the CHaRM will accept yoga mats for recycling! (It wouldn’t be Boulder if we didn’t recycle yoga mats, now would it?)

YES: Standard yoga mats made from plastic foam, rubber foam or jute

NO: badly soiled or smelly mats, tatami mats, other grass mats, rugs or carpet

We will charge a $1 per mat recycling fee to cover overhead costs (in addition to the $3 facility fee), and we ask that all mats be cleaned and free of major stains before you bring them to the CHaRM at 5030 "old" Pearl St. in Boulder.

Though it may be modest in scope, yoga mat recycling represents an important step in working with local manufacturers to build local recycling markets for materials that would otherwise be bound for the landfill. As with our bicycle inner tubes recycling program, the yoga mats we collect will be used as “textile” material by local companies to make new products like messenger bags, laptop covers, and totes.

The CHaRM announces a new material for recycling: yoga mats!
Support Eco-Cycle on Earth Day and Every Day

Zero Waste is one of the fastest, most effective strategies for mitigating climate change. According to the U.S. EPA, 42% of our greenhouse gas emissions come from the production, consumption and disposal of goods and food! Zero Waste addresses not just what ends up in your trash can, but our entire system of managing resources.

Eco-Cycle works to build Zero Waste communities throughout Boulder County and shares our knowledge and experience with the rest of the world. Support our efforts today with an online donation or sign up to become a Zero Waste Champion with a recurring monthly donation.

2010 Treecycle Mulch Giveaway & LeafDrop Compost Sale

Landscaping your yard just got cheaper.

On Saturday, May 1, 2010, the City & County of Denver will be holding its annual “Treecycle Mulch Giveaway & LeafDrop Compost Sale.”  The mulch is made by grinding up Christmas trees collected from residential homes this past January, and the compost is made from leaves collected in last fall’s LeafDrop program. This event is an opportunity for Denver residents to save some cash on their landscaping projects this spring and reuse materials that otherwise would have been sent as trash to the landfill.

New this year:  Recycle your plastic flower pots at Havana Nursery!  Garden Centers of Colorado will be collecting plastic garden pots for recycling as part of this event. Plastic garden pots of any size or color, hanging baskets (with wires removed), carrying trays and flower pack holders will be accepted.

There will be five sites around Denver where residents can go to pick up FREE mulch on May 1st from 8 AM to 3 PM (or while supplies last):

- NE Denver:  Havana Nursery (10450 Smith Rd., just south of I-70 on Havana St.)  Loader service for trucks and trailers and dig-your-own mulch.

- NE Denver: Fred Thomas Park (Quebec St. & 26th Ave.) - Dig-your-own mulch.

- NW Denver:  Sloan’s Lake Park (Sheridan Blvd. & 17th Ave.) - Dig-your-own mulch.

- SE Denver:  Veterans Park (Iowa St. & Vine St.) - Dig-your-own mulch.

- SW Denver:  Bear Creek Park (On Raleigh St. south of Dartmouth Ave.) - Dig-your-own mulch.

Compost will only be SOLD at the Havana Nursery site (10450 Smith Rd.) by A1 Organics for the incredibly low price of $3 per 10-gallon bag (about 40 pounds) or about $30 per cubic yard (plus tax).  Compost will only be available while supplies last, so come early and bring your own bags or containers if you plan on digging your own supply from the pile.  Loader service for trucks and trailers will also be available for compost, and there will be a limit of 3-cubic yards of compost per vehicle.

Please remember:
*       The event is for City & County of Denver residents only.
*       Bring a shovel or pitchfork and your own bags or containers to collect your supply of mulch or compost if you plan on digging your own from the pile.

*       Only the Havana Nursery site will have loader service (mulch & compost) for trucks and trailers.
*       Residents loading material into trucks or trailers must bring along a tarp to make sure loads are covered before leaving the site.

*       Only the Havana Nursery site will accept plastic flower pots for recycling. Plastic garden pots are also accepted for recycling anytime at local participating garden stores.  For a list of participating stores visit online at GardenCentersofColorado.org

*       Commercial vehicles are prohibited from taking or selling the City’s mulch.

Compost is a soil amendment made from decomposed organic material that can be mixed into soil or spread thinly over lawns to help reduce water and fertilizer needs.

Mulch is ground wood chips that can be used to control weeds, help soil retain moisture and protect shallow-rooted plants from weather extremes.

New Zoning Code Information
Denver Planning Board to Kick Off New Code Adoption Process Feb. 17

The Denver Planning Board will begin the adoption process for the City's new zoning code on schedule at its regular meeting at 3pm on Wednesday, February 17.  Chair Brad Buchanan said the Board will consider the new code and map over multiple meetings, beginning with information sessions from Community Planning and Development staff and culminating in a formal public hearing.

Following its public hearing, the Board will make a recommendation to City Council. Council's Blueprint Denver Committee will then begin formal consideration of the code before referring the measure to the full City Council.  As with any zoning matter, Council's process includes a required public hearing before adoption.

"Although this schedule will inevitably extend the overall timetable for adopting the new code," Buchanan said, "I believe this is the appropriate and respectful way for the Planning Board to carry the code forward to the public and City Council given the significance of this legislation to our City and the considerable amount of public input we have received." An updated estimated adoption schedule follows.
